Our Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy
1. Purpose
Snowford Grange is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people receiving counselling services. This policy aligns with statutory guidance including Keeping Children Safe in Education and Working Together to Safeguard Children..
2. Scope
This policy applies to all counsellors, volunteers, and associates working with children and young people across primary and secondary schools in the UK, whether on school premises or delivering online services.
3. Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
Steve Goodrem is the organisation’s DSL, responsible for:
- Overseeing safeguarding compliance and training.
- Acting as the lead contact for safeguarding concerns.
- Liaising with school DSLs, local authorities, and statutory agencies where appropriate.
4. Counsellors’ Responsibilities
All counsellors must:
- Familiarise themselves with this policy, up-to-date KCSIE guidance and relevant school child protection policies.
- Work in accordance with each school’s safeguarding procedures.
- Report any safeguarding concerns promptly to both the school DSL.
- Never investigate concerns themselves but refer appropriately.
- Maintain confidentiality while understanding safeguarding overrides secrecy.
- Keep safeguarding training and refreshers updated.
5. Identifying Child Protection Concerns
Counsellors must be alert to signs of physical, emotional, sexual abuse, neglect, exploitation, grooming, and online safety risks, including:
- Unexplained injuries or frequent absences.
- Changes in behaviour or mood.
- Disclosures of abuse or harm.
6. Reporting Concerns
On identifying concerns, counsellors must:
- Report immediately to the school DSL.
- Document all relevant details factually and promptly.
- In urgent cases or if no action is taken, escalate concerns to local safeguarding authorities directly.
7. Confidentiality and Information Sharing
Safeguarding concerns must be shared on a strictly need-to-know basis to protect the child. Confidentiality cannot be promised if a child is at risk. Records will be securely stored and handled in line with data protection requirements.
8. Training
Counsellors will have appropriate safeguarding training and appropriate refreshers to keep updated on policies, legislation, and best practices.
9. Policy Review
This policy is reviewed annually, or sooner if required by law or changes in guidance, involving consultation with relevant stakeholders.
